Myth 7 of 7: Speed tests reflect user-experience
The myth that “speed tests reflect user experience” is misleading; while speed tests provide raw data on internet performance at a specific moment, they do not fully capture the real-world user experience. Several factors, including network congestion, latency, device capabilities, and application requirements, all contribute to actual user satisfaction with a network. There are in fact many reasons why speed tests alone do not accurately reflect user experience:
Speed Tests Measure Ideal Conditions, Not Everyday Use
Misconception: A speed test accurately represents what users experience while using the network.
Reality: Speed tests are often run under ideal conditions – they are a static measurement of maximum download/upload speeds without accounting for real-world fluctuations like network congestion, background processes, or multiple simultaneous users. These tests are often performed during low-usage periods or in controlled environments, which does not reflect how users experience the network during peak hours or in crowded areas.
Speed tests are often conducted over short, low-usage periods and may not capture Wi-Fi interference, channel congestion, or the effects of multiple users accessing the same access point. In dense environments like offices, apartments, or public spaces, interference from neighboring networks and multiple devices competing for bandwidth can severely degrade performance.
Impact: A network might perform well on a speed test but struggle under heavy load. For example, during a speed test, a single device may get high speeds, but once many users connect to the network (e.g., in an office or shared environment), the actual experience can degrade significantly.
Users may experience dropped connections, slow loading times, or poor streaming quality in areas with heavy Wi-Fi interference or congestion, even if a speed test shows high throughput when no other users are active. Wi-Fi performance can vary drastically depending on location, device type, and network load, none of which is fully captured by a brief speed test.
Latency and Jitter Are Key Factors for User Experience
Misconception: High speed means excellent network performance.
Reality: Even if a speed test shows a fast connection over Wi-Fi, latency (the time it takes for data to travel between the user and the server) and jitter (variability in data packet arrival times) can severely affect user experience. Low latency is crucial for real-time applications like video conferencing, online gaming, and VoIP calls. If latency and jitter are high, users will experience lag, buffering, or choppy audio/video, even with high-speed results.
Impact: Speed tests typically do not account for network stability and responsiveness (latency and jitter), which are critical for applications where real-time interaction is required. A high-speed network with poor latency or jitter can result in a frustrating experience despite good speed test results.
Wired vs Wireless Speed tests
Misconception: The speeds received over wireless should be the same as those on wired.
Reality: Wireless networks operate on half duplex within a broadcast domain. This means that everyone is unequally sharing the wireless medium. Device capabilities in wireless differ much more than their wired counterparts resulting in a less linear, predictable throughput. In wired, devices do not share the same physical cable to communicate to the next device upstream and is not hindered by distance or noise from other users.
Impact: Comparing wired and wireless speed test results does not give an accurate representation of ongoing speed, as wireless is effected by many other factors than just upstream bandwidth / congestion.
Speed Tests Don’t Account for Device or Application Limitations
Misconception: The speed test result reflects the experience across all devices and applications.
Reality: Different devices have different network capabilities, and not all applications require or benefit from maximum speeds. A speed test might show high speeds on a powerful laptop with the latest Wi-Fi standards, but older devices with outdated network adapters may experience much slower connections. Similarly, most everyday applications (e.g., email, web browsing) don’t need extremely high speeds to perform well but require low latency and consistent throughput.
Impact: Speed tests do not account for how different devices or applications behave on the network. For instance, streaming 4K video, cloud backups, or large file downloads require consistent speeds, while video calls require low latency more than high speed. User experience varies by device and task, which a single speed test cannot accurately reflect.
Network Configuration and QoS
Misconception: Speed tests measure the full potential of the network for all applications.
Reality: Many networks use Quality of Service (QoS) policies to prioritise certain types of traffic (e.g., video calls or VoIP) over others. Speed tests typically measure the maximum throughput without taking into account how bandwidth is allocated or prioritised during normal usage. For example, video calls may be prioritised at the expense of lower-priority downloads.
Impact: Users may experience different levels of performance for different tasks. Video streaming might be smooth even if download speeds are slower due to QoS prioritisation. Speed tests only measure raw throughput, not how effectively the network is managing multiple types of traffic, which is a major factor in real-world user experience.
Internet Backbone and External Factors
Misconception: Speed tests reflect the speed users get for all internet activities.
Reality: Speed tests usually connect to the nearest test server to measure the maximum possible speed between the user and the server. However, real-world user experience is affected by the internet backbone, routing paths, and distance to the servers hosting the content. Performance can vary significantly depending on how data is routed and the quality of connections beyond the local network.
Impact: A user might get great speed test results with a local server but experience slow performance when accessing distant services or websites. Speed tests do not account for routing issues, peering agreements, or internet congestion outside the user’s local network, all of which can impact actual browsing, streaming, or gaming experiences.
Real-World Applications Require More Than Just Speed
Misconception: Faster speeds in a speed test mean better performance for all applications.
Reality: Many applications require more than just raw speed. For instance, video conferencing needs low latency and stable connections, online gaming relies on low ping, and cloud-based applications demand consistent upload/download performance. Speed tests focus on peak speed for a short duration, which does not always correlate with how applications behave during sustained, real-time usage.
Impact: While a speed test may show high speeds, buffering during streaming, lag during gaming, or delays during video calls can still occur if other network factors like latency, packet loss, or bandwidth contention aren’t optimised. Speed alone does not guarantee smooth, seamless operation of all applications.
Conclusion: Speed Tests Don’t Fully Reflect User Experience
While speed tests provide a snapshot of network performance, they do not capture the full picture of what users experience day-to-day. Factors such as latency, jitter, Wi-Fi interference, device variability, and real-world traffic loads all influence actual user satisfaction. Speed test results can often be misleading, suggesting that the network is performing well even when key aspects of user experience are suffering.
To truly evaluate network performance, businesses and individuals should consider not just raw speed, but also network stability, coverage, application behaviour, and user demand patterns. Focusing solely on speed tests can lead to overconfidence in network performance while neglecting the actual needs and experience of end users.
